SIGNS: Week 5

What does it mean to be truly satisfied? In John 6, the feeding of the five thousand is far more than a remarkable miracle. It is a sign, carefully placed by John at the time of Passover, pointing us to something ancient and something eternal all at once. We see in this story the echoes of Israel's wilderness journey, of manna falling from heaven, of Moses leading a hungry people through a barren land. But we are invited to see something greater than Moses here. The one standing on that hillside does not merely pray for bread. He is the bread. The sign forces us to ask the question that runs through the entire Gospel of John: who is this man? What we discover is a king whose compassion moves before we even voice our need, whose provision does not merely meet the moment but overflows into twelve baskets of abundance. The kingdom he brings is not characterized by scarcity. It is characterized by more than enough. And that abundance is not just for our physical hunger. It speaks directly to the deeper longings we carry, the ones that success and achievement and relationships have never quite been able to silence. This message invites us to look honestly at what we are feeding our souls and to consider whether we have been settling for far less than what has been offered to us.
