Humble King: Week 1

Nov 30, 2025    Todd Stanley

This Advent message invites us into a profound meditation on the most countercultural virtue of our faith: humility. We discover that God's chosen doorway into our world wasn't through power, prestige, or pomp, but through the vulnerability of a baby in a manger. The contrast is striking—in the Greco-Roman world, humility was considered a vice, something for slaves and children, not honorable people. Yet Jesus, the only one who could rightfully demand honor, chose instead to clothe himself in weakness. Through passages like Luke 2, John 1, and Philippians 2, we see that Christ's humility wasn't just a temporary strategy but the very revelation of God's heart. He didn't arrive demanding worship; he came as a servant, washing feet, befriending outcasts, and ultimately giving his life as a ransom. This message challenges our modern obsession with self-promotion and social media boasting, calling us instead to a 'you before me' mentality. The beautiful truth is that when we choose humility—taking the lowest seat, performing hidden acts of kindness, serving without recognition—we're not diminishing ourselves but actually conforming to the image of our humble King. The path of humility may lead through suffering, but it's the very path that transforms us into the likeness of Christ.
